Nauticool Delivers Passenger Comfort and Battery Reliability for London’s Electric Ferry

Nauticool were chosen to design, supply, and commission the cooling systems for a new electric passenger ferry operating along the River Thames. The UK manufactured vessel represents a significant step forward in sustainable river transport, with electric propulsion reducing emissions and improving air quality in central London. To ensure passenger comfort and battery reliability, Nauticool delivered two key systems:

  • Passenger ferry main air conditioning system
  • Battery room cooling system

Passenger Comfort: Air Conditioning System

For passenger spaces, Nauticool installed Fujitsu split systems with indoor cassette units. The design focused on delivering efficient, reliable cooling within a marine environment.

  • Durability: All coils were treated with a protective coating to safeguard against corrosion caused by the coastal and river environment.
  • Passenger comfort: The cassette units distribute cool air evenly throughout the cabin, maintaining a comfortable temperature for passengers, even during high summer demand.
  • Efficiency: Fujitsu systems provide a balance between low energy consumption and high performance – essential for an electric vessel where energy efficiency is critical.

Safety & Reliability: Battery Room Cooling System

The ferry’s electric propulsion relies on a large battery installation that requires precise environmental control. To ensure safe and optimal performance, Nauticool designed and supplied a mini sea water chilled water system (Dometic).

  • Variable speed operation: The chiller (VARCX72) adjusts its output depending on cooling demand, delivering high efficiency and reduced power consumption.
  • Cooling distribution: Chilled water is circulated to fan coil units in the battery room, ensuring consistent cooling and stable conditions.
  • Battery protection: Maintaining the correct temperature prevents overheating, prolongs battery life, and safeguards against potential thermal risks.

Outcome

With these systems in place, the passenger ferry operates smoothly on the River Thames, offering:

  • A comfortable environment for passengers year-round.
  • Reliable cooling for critical battery systems, ensuring performance and safety.
  • Solutions specifically engineered for marine conditions, balancing efficiency, durability, and sustainability.

Nauticool’s expertise in marine HVAC and cooling systems contributed to the successful commissioning of this pioneering electric ferry, supporting London’s move towards greener, more sustainable public transport.
